It's Hops harvest time!

We're picking hops for the next three weeks (first half of September). It's a wonderful time of year as we gather a convivial group together to hang out and pick together. We've already picked the early Fuggles, Mt Hood and Goldings, next week it's onward to Willamette and many more! There's nothing as wonderful as the smell of fresh hops in the dryer - except the smell of the fresh-hopped beers which will be coming soon!

Finally, spring has appeared! The frogs are singing, the redwing blackbirds have arrived, and we have lambs on the farm. It's taken a while - especially compared to last spring, which was practically midsummer by now. Constant rain has kept our fields cold and unworkable for a long time, but we are finally able to get into our yards and start digging rhizomes. We will be done digging in the next few days, and will start cutting, grading and packaging after that. We hope to be shipping within two weeks. With the season for making big decisions about hops upon us, here's some interesting resources which may help you figure out what to buy and how to determine your cost of production and capital costs. Persephone Brewing has done some good research - find it here. Ontario's Ministry of Ag has a whole section on hops production, we wonder why the BC Ministry hasn't caught up?
