The friend at the top of this page is our lovely Jersey cow, Morag. While she doesn't have a page of her own (and if she did, she'd probably just chew the cud with you), others of our friends do. And many of these links are important in their own right. Check out the notes, and the sites, and you'll see why we recommend them.

The Ram's Horn

Besided being "a monthly journal of food systems analysis", The Ram's Horn is a vital source for information on who's doing what to the food we eat. It is a celebration of thoughtful action, and is always provoking and insightful. And it's published by Rebecca's parents, Brewster and Cathleen Kneen.

Stellar Seeds

This is a great BC seed company, growing organic seeds for cool climates, specializing in heritage varieties of flowers and vegetables. Patrick Steiner is our partner in Left Fields as well as running Stellar Seeds. His lettuce and tomato varieties are outstanding! For more information on BC seeds, the www.bcseeds.org website contains a database of BC grown seeds and articles on seed growing. It is a great resource for farmers looking for bioregional seeds.

Freshops

Freshops supplies our hops and rhizomes, as well as being the best broker for organic hops in western North America. They carry both whole and pelleted organic and spray-free hops from Germany and New Zealand. Their website is also full of information and links on growing hops and using hops. Oh, they also carry non-organic hops...

COABC

Certified Organic Associations of BC is the body which oversees certification in BC, and which creates the guidelines under which we all operate. Their website has info on certification, links to farms, and the quarterly newsletter. Lots of information, a great source if you are trying to find organic foods, farmers, supplies or general information.

Great Canadian Beer Festival

This is one of the best beer festivals in Canada! Run by CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale), it is held every fall in Victoria, BC, and features cask-conditioned beers from 30-odd BC and Pacific Northwest microbreweries and brewpubs. It is by invitation only, and is the best place to check out new releases, unusual beers, and brewers' favorites, as well as all the familiar brands. There are educational seminars as well, on everything from beer tasting to hops. This festival has been going for ten years! Check in to their website early, because tickets go on sale in very limited locations and sell out in about 30 minutes for the two day festival.

Okanagan Fest-of-Ales

This festival is held in Penticton, BC, and is a wonderful celebration of the brewer's art. It, too, is a two day festival, and it holds down the spring end of the festival season. About 30 brewers from the region bring out their favorites - the festival includes local cider as well.

Probrewer

Simply the best site on the web for the professional brewer. Useful tools, a great database for finding suppliers of everything from stainless steel to irish moss, and a great database on breweries all over North America. If you're travelling, use this site to find breweries and brewpubs wherever you're going.

Real Beer

And this is the best site on the web for homebrewers and beer lovers. I'm not going to list everything they have, because it is apparently endless. Check out their info on styles, homebrew ideas and beer-related events to get started.

Wolaver's

This is (we think) the oldest organic brewery in North America. They are based in California, with contract brewers all over the USA. These people are extremely committed to the whole organic ideal, seeking sustainability in everything from beer transportation (hence contract brewing) to organic t-shirts and recycled paper for coasters. Plus, they make great beer!

WWOOFCanada

Willing Workers On Organic Farms (WWOOF) is dedicated to helping those who would like to work as volunteers on organic farms. This is a great way to learn about organic farming, work hard and eat well, and travel all over the world. It's a great deal, a wonderful way to meet people and learn about new places, and one of the best ways to learn about organic farming in all its aspects. Many WWOOF hosts also take long-term apprentices.

Canadian Organic Growers

COG is a national information network for organic farmers, gardeners and consumers. COG is a leading organic information and networking resource for Canada, promoting the methods and techniques of organic growing along with the associated environmental, health and social benefits. Plus they have one of the best lists of links out there.
